Probezeit

The probation period at the start of a new job in Germany, typically lasting up to 6 months.

Probezeit is the probation period at the beginning of a new employment relationship in Germany. During this time, both the employer and the employee can terminate the contract with only 2 weeks' notice, compared to the standard 4 weeks after probation.

The maximum legal duration is 6 months (§622 BGB). It must be explicitly stated in the employment contract. During Probezeit, you are still entitled to full salary, paid sick leave, and prorated vacation days.

Most companies use the full 6 months, though some offer shorter periods (3-4 months) for senior hires.
