Understanding Your Salary in Germany
Germany has a progressive income tax system where higher earners pay a higher percentage. In addition to income tax, employees pay social contributions that are split 50/50 with their employer, covering pension, health insurance, unemployment insurance, and long-term care insurance.
Tax Classes determine how much tax is withheld monthly. Class I is for singles, Class III/V is for married couples where one spouse earns significantly more, and Class IV is for married couples with similar incomes. Your tax class only affects monthly withholding — the final annual amount is the same regardless.
Church Tax (Kirchensteuer) is 8-9% of your income tax, only if you're a registered member of a recognized church. You can opt out by deregistering at the local Standesamt for a small fee of €20-35.
Blue Card Requirements: For an EU Blue Card, you need a minimum gross salary of €45,300/year (general) or €41,041.80/year for shortage occupations (IT, engineering, math, sciences, medicine).
