Anmeldung

The mandatory address registration at your local Bürgeramt within 14 days of moving to Germany.

Anmeldung is the mandatory address registration you must complete at your local Bürgeramt (citizens' office) within 14 days of moving to a new address in Germany.

You need:

  • Your passport or ID
  • A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation form) from your landlord
  • The completed registration form (Anmeldeformular)

The Anmeldung is essential — without it, you cannot:

  • Open a German bank account
  • Register for health insurance
  • Apply for a Blue Card or residence permit
  • File a tax return
  • Get a Steuer-ID (tax identification number)

The registration itself is free. Book an appointment online at your local Bürgeramt — walk-in availability varies by city.
