About the team
The Credit Risk Analytics (CRA) team is a focused, high-impact group responsible for the modelling and analytics that underpin SumUp's global lending portfolio — a mature, scaled business with a strong credit risk foundation already in production. This role exists at a critical inflection point: as the portfolio grows into new markets, the challenge isn't building from scratch, it's safely extracting marginal gains from a complex system where every change carries real stakes. As a Senior Data Scientist embedded in day-to-day lending decisions, you'll strengthen our ability to improve what already works, reduce operational risk, and ensure long-term reliability at scale.
What you'll do
-
Iterate on existing credit risk models to improve stability, predictive power, and net revenue impact, including deep dives to support risk decisions
-
Develop, test, and deploy new model versions in close collaboration with Credit Risk Engineering, ensuring no regressions or operational issues
-
Improve machine learning pipelines and workflows to reduce maintenance overhead and failure modes
-
Evaluate and integrate new internal and external data sources (such as credit bureaus and open banking) into existing models and processes
-
Monitor models in production, investigating performance shifts or anomalies to maintain portfolio integrity
-
Document work clearly and contribute to code reviews, design discussions, and pair programming to uphold high technical standards
You'll be great for this role if…
-
Proven hands-on experience in Data Science within a credit risk or financial decisioning environment — this is a must-have
-
Advanced proficiency in Python (pandas, PySpark, scikit-learn) and SQL for complex data retrieval and manipulation
-
Strong understanding of Data Science principles, including statistics, probability theory, and machine learning concepts
-
Track record of building, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models end-to-end at scale
-
Strong software engineering practices, including writing clean, maintainable, testable code with version control and documentation
-
Fluency in English, with the ability to communicate technical findings clearly to varied audiences
