Thesis: Analyze and assess the criticality of torque merging from multiple EPUs supplying a common propeller shaft.

Code – D MUC AEFS

MTU and eMoSys are developing a new 600 kW Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU) with integrated inverter, lightweight cooled stator, high-pole rotor, and geared architecture. In a design study, 2–3 EPUs combine torque via a gearbox and are powered by independent fuel-cell systems (FCS).



YOUR TASKS

Planning & Literature Review:

  • Survey existing research on multi-motor torque merging, drivetrain dynamics, gearbox backlash, and control synchronization

Model Adaptation:

  • Update/extend existing MTU simulation models for dual-EPU operation, including FCS behavior, gearbox elasticity, and torque-control coordination

Simulation-Based Analysis 

  • Analyze torque imbalance, transient mismatch, oscillations, backlash effects, torsional dynamics, and load-sharing
  • Documentation & Recommendations
  • Summarize critical findings, propose mitigation strategies (control or mechanical), and deliver structured documentation


YOUR PROFILE

  • Engineering student (Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, Mechatronics)
  • interest in electric drives, controls, or drivetrain dynamics
  • Simscapce/Simulink beneficial
