Job description

Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit building a better technology future — powered by people, open by design, fueled by imagination.

We deliver people-first alternatives to today’s extractive systems. We build side by side with developers, innovators and advocates, united in the belief that a better technology future is not only possible — it’s ours to create.

The Team

The Development team at Mozilla Foundation drives the philanthropic support that fuels our mission to ensure the internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all. The team builds meaningful relationships with individual donors, foundations, and partners who share our vision for a healthier internet. Through strategic fundraising initiatives, we secure the resources needed to advance Mozilla's mission of promoting openness, innovation, and opportunity online.

Mozilla Foundation’s grassroots donor community is one of its most distinctive assets: a globally distributed, multilingual base of supporters who believe in an open internet and choose to fund that belief.

The Position

The Director, Grassroots Engagement is responsible for the overall strategy and performance of Mozilla Foundation’s grassroots engagement and fundraising program. This role leads how Mozilla identifies, engages, and retains grassroots supporters across channels and languages, with particular responsibility for the email program, supporter experience, and revenue performance. The role also provides leadership across team management, program strategy, vendor relationships, and cross-functional collaboration.

This role reports to the Vice President, Development, partnering closely with cross-functional leaders in Strategic Communications and Community while bringing its own point of view to how digital fundraising and civic engagement intersect in a fast-changing landscape. The role also directly manages the Manager, Grassroots Fundraising, Email Production Specialist and Email Production Associate.

Job responsibilities

Here are some projects you'll likely work on in your first 6 months:

  • Set the strategic direction and goals for Mozilla Foundation’s grassroots engagement and fundraising program, including key performance indicators and revenue targets.
  • Assess and strengthen the email program, including supporter journeys, segmentation, messaging coordination, production flow, and testing approaches.
  • Review email list health and donor engagement performance, and identify opportunities to improve deliverability, double opt-in conversion, unsubscribe rates, and long-term retention.
  • Support and develop the grassroots engagement team through clear priorities, coaching, and operating rhythms.
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships with Strategic Communications, Community, and Development Operations to align program strategy, systems, and supporter experience.
  • Review vendor relationships, tooling, and budget needs to ensure the program is well positioned for execution and growth.

As a  Director, Grassroots Engagement at Mozilla, you will be responsible for …

Grassroots Engagement & Fundraising Strategy

  • Setting the strategic direction for Mozilla Foundation’s grassroots digital engagement program, defining how supporters move from awareness to participation, financial support, and long-term connection to our mission.
  • Designing and owning the program framework for segmentation, supporter journeys, and testing and optimization across channels.
  • Partnering closely with Strategic Communications to align messaging, coordinate email content strategy and production, and create room for experimentation.
  • Supporting program and communications staff to deliver effective, timely emails that keep supporters informed and engaged.
  • Overseeing email list health and making key tradeoff decisions to improve deliverability, double opt-in conversion, unsubscribe rates, and other year-over-year performance indicators.
  • Establishing short-term, annual, and long-term grassroots fundraising goals, and ensuring the program is positioned to meet or exceed them.
  • Defining and tracking key performance indicators for grassroots engagement and fundraising, and reporting against internal goals and industry benchmarks.

People Management

  • Directly managing a team that includes the Manager, Grassroots Fundraising, Email Production Specialist, and Email Production Associate.
  • Providing regular coaching focused on execution, goal progression, and long-term professional growth.
  • Supporting the Manager, Grassroots Fundraising in their own people management responsibilities and helping build the structures that allow the team’s work to run effectively.
  • Identifying resourcing, headcount, tooling, and budget needs over time, and helping make the case for investment during planning cycles.
  • Fostering a team culture that values experimentation, data-informed decision-making, and strong execution.

Development Team Leadership

  • Providing the Vice President of Development and other organizational leaders with reporting that translates grassroots program performance into strategic insight, tradeoffs, and recommendations.
  • Partnering with the Director of Development Operations to ensure the technical infrastructure supports both team needs and donor experience.
  • Serving as the internal expert on grassroots engagement strategy, advising cross-functional partners in Community and Strategic Communications.
  • Contributing to Development team planning and decision-making as a peer leader, bringing a grassroots perspective to organizational priorities and resource allocation.
  • Managing high-level vendor relationships, including contracts, costs, and delivery expectations.
  • Representing Mozilla in the broader digital fundraising field, maintaining peer relationships and ensuring program practices reflect current standards and emerging innovation.

Your Professional Profile:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in digital fundraising, grassroots engagement, or direct response programs, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role with direct revenue accountability.
  • Demonstrated expertise running complex, high-volume email programs and multi-channel fundraising strategies at significant scale, ideally with a global or multilingual audience.
  • Proven ability to set direction, create buy-in, and deliver measurable results for a program area — including defining evaluation criteria and iterating based on performance data.
  • Experience managing and developing staff, including managing other managers; proven ability to lead remote or distributed teams effectively.
  • Track record of managing significant external resources including agency relationships, platform vendors, and budget lines.
  • Familiarity with the tools required to engage supporters online, including email service providers, fundraising platforms, CRM systems, and analytics tools.
  • Strong cross-organizational collaborator with experience working across communications, community, and product functions.
  • Experience working in or with global organizations; high degree of cultural competence and experience designing programs for multilingual audiences preferred.
  • Commitment to Mozilla Foundation’s mission and to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We Are Excited To See Any Additional Experience With:

  • Working in or with global organizations.
  • Designing programs for multilingual audiences.
  • Strong cultural competence in supporter engagement across geographies and audiences.
  • Visibility in the broader digital fundraising field, including peer relationships or participation in sector conversations.
  • Operating in fast-changing digital fundraising or civic engagement environments.
  • Leading with strong instincts for experimentation, innovation, and supporter-centered engagement.
