Custom Engineering is a department within Cytiva that develops and delivers customized hardware and software solutions used in Biopharma manufacturing. The organization has approximately 200 employees based in Uppsala, Umeå, Dreieich, Pune, Shrewsbury (MA), and Shanghai. Custom Engineering is a growing business, and in addition to customized hardware, we also manage predefined/standard products—low-volume recurring designs developed by the Custom Engineering organization. These products, together with Custom Engineering configurable products, are under change control.
We are now looking for a Lead System Designer with a passion for product quality to strengthen our Lifecycle Management team.
In this role, you are responsible for product functionality and quality, including specifications, component and equipment selection, and regulatory compliance. Your daily work includes close collaboration with other design disciplines (Functional, Mechanical, Automation, and Electrical design), as well as Production and Verification teams, to ensure that all critical requirements are gathered and implemented in the product.
Key responsibilities
- Act as technical owner for assigned Custom Engineering predefined and configurable products, ensuring performance, quality, and regulatory compliance throughout the lifecycle.
- Collaborate closely with Functional, Mechanical, Automation, and Electrical design, as well as Production and Verification teams, to secure robust and compliant design intent.
- Ensure high-quality documentation and traceability in accordance with Cytiva, Custom Engineering, and regulatory requirements.
- Be part of the Change Control Board (CCB) core team and responsible for activities associated with change requests and change orders (ECR/ECO) for existing predefined and configurable product offerings. This includes performing investigations, proposing solutions, and implementing approved changes.
- Be engaged in all phases of lifecycle management and sustaining engineering, including planning, design, development, documentation, testing, supplier interfaces, manufacturing, and service support.
- Be involved in standardization activities for Custom Engineering products.
Who you are
- You hold an MSc or BSc in Engineering, Physics, or Biotechnology, or have equivalent knowledge and experience.
- You have strong experience in system-level engineering, including requirements breakdown, interface management, and cross-functional technical coordination.
- You have documented experience working with engineering change processes (ECR/ECO) and are comfortable assessing risks, impacts, and regulatory implications.
- You are analytical and structured, with a proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues and drive data-based decisions.
- You have previous experience in product or process development with a strong technical interest.
- You are proficient in English, written and spoken.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Swedish language skills
- You are a self-starter—energized and results-oriented and a strong problem solver.
- You demonstrate technical leadership by guiding others, making informed decisions, and securing alignment without formal personnel responsibility.
