MACE lab Mission
MACE lab at EPFL is looking for a Molecular Biology and Microbiology technician to join our team at 40-60%.
Main duties and responsibilities

Process environmental samples (soil, water, snow) for microbiological and molecular analyses

Perform microbial culturing, isolation, and basic characterization

Conduct DNA/RNA extractions
-
Preform PCR/qPCR
-
Sample preparation for sequencing
-
Maintain sterile technique and prevent contamination
-
Operate and maintain standard lab equipment (autoclave, incubators, biosafety cabinet, centrifuges)
-
Record and organize experimental data and sample metadata
-
Manage sample storage, labeling, and inventory of consumables
-
Ensure compliance with lab safety and SOPs
-
Be open to joining local field expeditions (rare)
Profile
Technical:
-
Degree or diploma in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related field
-
Experience handling environmental samples such as soil, water, biomass, or biofilms is an asset but not mandatory
-
Hands-on laboratory experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology
-
Proficiency in preparation of culture media, buffers, and laboratory reagents
-
Experience with microbial culturing, sterile technique, and sample processing
-
Familiarity with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, or sequencing workflows
-
Basic data handling skills using Excel, LIMS, or scientific software

Well-organized with good record-keeping skills

Able to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently

Strong team player with good communication skills

Fluency in English required; French is an advantage
