Job description

Be part of the future of renewable energy by shaping cutting‑edge grid-forming converter control technology at Vestas. Join a highly skilled R&D team working on innovation, where your technical skills will directly affect how wind energy integrates into modern power grids. Be part of a global mission that not only advances sustainable power systems but also helps avoid billions of tons of carbon emissions.

Vestas Technology & Operations > Research & Development (R&D) > Converter Control Algorithms

Come and be part of the energy transition - Vestas' products have until now helped our customers avoiding 1.7 billion tons of carbon emissions.

Vestas Technology & Operations holds the R&D function of Vestas. Through innovation, development, and continuous improvement we develop the products and technologies that reduce the cost of energy and bring the highest possible value to our customers and to Vestas. To put it short: Vestas Technology & Operations develops the sustainable power systems of the future.

Within the VTO business unit, the R&D department Converter & Electrical (C&E) Module is responsible for technology and product development of frequency converters, their control, and high-voltage transformers, switchgear, and cables for use within the wind turbine. The C&E Module (department) is composed of several Sub Modules, specific to each of the electrical components, as well as an overarching Technical Management Sub Module.

The Converter Control Algorithms is crucial for maintaining Vestas' leadership in sustainable energy. Our team develops and implements all Vestas turbine families' converter applications and control functionalities. Within the grid team, we ensure compliance with various grid codes, develop grid-type test certification strategies, manage power delivery to the grid, and engineer features for grid events such as voltage or frequency fluctuations. We oversee the entire value chain, from requirements and design for new turbines to validation, field support, and sales and service assistance. Our department is known for its highly skilled employees who consistently balance creativity with quality. Leveraging our core knowledge, we deliver high-quality converter solutions that meet system, product, and grid requirements.

  • Define converter requirements and oversee control software development, testing, and validation
  • Contribute to the improvements and updates of existing converter control software based on real-world turbine feedback and customer requirements
  • Be responsible for technical tasks and solutions in cross-functional projects
  • Collaborate with internal teams to promote innovation and continuous improvement in converter control

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field coupled with 8+ years of experience in power converter development, control design, and implementation
  • Deep understanding of Grid-Forming Control and power converter control strategies
  • Solid knowledge of dynamic system modelling, controller design, and verification through simulations and tests
  • Practical experience with control of power electronics, PWM strategies, and industrial software development
  • Familiarity with grid connection of converters and compliance with international grid codes.
  • Embedded control development for power electronics

Competencies

  • Demonstrates a high level of self-motivation and persistence in acquiring new skills and knowledge
  • Solid problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills with a focus on delivering effective solutions
  • Ability to guide and mentor team members while ensuring high-quality technical deliverables and promote efficient communication and collaboration skills across teams
  • Proficient at managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously without compromising quality or losing focus
  • Skilled in delegation, offering clear guidance to team members to promote collaboration and efficiency
  • Proficient in estimating task durations and maintaining clear communication with tech leads and project managers
  • Striving to enhance quality by simplifying processes and implementing elegant, efficient solutions

What we offer
