Job description

Hi there!

Our goal at Data4Life is to make the world a healthier place. Our Product and Project Management team makes sure we move toward that goal with focus, rigor and speed -translating research ambition into software that generates real impact in healthcare, in Germany and beyond.

We’re looking for a Senior Project Manager to lead our contribution to AIR·MS (the Artificial Intelligence-Ready Mount Sinai platform) and drive Data2Evidence (D2E) project throughout the world. AIR·MS integrates structured EHR data, clinical notes, and metadata for pathology and radiology images, covering more than 12 million patients - on top of the OMOP Common Data Model, and makes it accessible for interactive cohort building, AI model training, and federated analysis in a HIPAA-compliant cloud and on-prem HPC environment. It’s a joint effort of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai (HPI·MS), the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, and Data4Life.

This is a full-time position based in Potsdam / Berlin. You’ll report to the Head of Product and Project Management and take over end-to-end delivery of AIR·MS, working across engineering, data, clinical research, and partner organizations on two continents.

Your future role

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of multi-year, multi-stakeholder platform workstreams spanning Europe, America, Africa and Asia - from roadmap and quarterly OKR planning through execution, risk management, and stakeholder reporting to C-level and external partners.

  • Drive cross-functional delivery across our software engineering, platform, ML, design, and quality teams -aligning Scrum and Kanban delivery cadences with waterfall-style timelines typical of research programs.

  • Own the program’s operating model within Data4Life: planning, tracking, reporting, dependency management, and decision logs that keep engineering and scientific stakeholders on the same page.

  • Partner with principal investigators, clinicians, and researchers at Mount Sinai, HPI, and further collaborations to translate research questions into concrete, shippable platform capabilities - without losing scientific nuance.

  • Manage Data2Evidence (D2E) projects, coordinating between international health organizations, NGOs, and research partners to implement data-driven solutions in diverse settings, including resource-limited environments in Africa and Latin America.

  • Foster the adoption of solutions from D4L and the OHDSI community.

  • Communicate progress as impact, turning engineering milestones into stories that resonate with clinicians, researchers, funders, and the public.

  • Contribute to maturing our project management practice across Data4Life.

What you need to succeed

  • 5+ years of project or program management experience in software development, with significant work on data platforms or health informatics.

  • 3+ years in a regulated healthcare or life sciences environment; shipping under the constraints that come with patient data, and knowing what “audit-ready” means.

  • 3+ years leading projects that involve ETL pipelines, large-scale data warehouses, data analytics tooling, or cloud infrastructure; having a deep understanding of the work to challenge estimates, not just collect them.

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects across time zones, cultures, and organization types (e.g. non-profit, university hospitals, academic institutes, and industry partners).

  • Proven ability to run large, multi-stakeholder programs across engineering, design, and quality -planning, tracking, reporting, and keeping the critical path visible

  • Hands-on experience working within or alongside academic institutions and clinical research environments.

  • Working knowledge of managing sensitive patient data under HIPAA and/or GDPR.

  • Mastery of Scrum or Kanban, with the flexibility to interface with waterfall timelines common in research projects.

  • Comfort thriving in fast-paced, evolving environments where structures need to be streamlined and rapid execution in a highly-regulated environment is needed.

  • A Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Software Engineering), a relevant scientific discipline (Biomedical Engineering, Health Informatics), or Business/Management -or equivalent professional experience managing complex software/data projects.

  • Working understanding of the OMOP Common Data Model and OHDSI tooling, HL7 FHIR, and DICOM is a plus

  • Languages: You're fluent in English. German at B2 level and/or a third language is a plus.

Why you will love working with us

  • High level of personal responsibility and creative freedom
  • Nonprofit work with a clear purpose — Make the world a healthier place. At Data4Life, you'll find a meaningful role in a nonprofit environment with tangible impact on research and work on socially impactful projects in the healthcare sector
  • A diverse, international team of professionals working together across Potsdam, Berlin, and Singapore, and collaborating closely with partners with leading partners from research, technology, and healthcare such as at HPI·MS in New York and beyond.
  • Flexible working models with the option to work from home
  • Permanent employment contract with 30 days of vacation
  • Attractive employee benefits, e.g. private supplementary health insurance, public transport ticket

Good to know

  • We especially welcome applicants from the LGBTQI+ community, people with a migration background, people of color, and individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses to the team.
  • If you need support or special assistance during the application or interview process due to a disability, please feel free to let us know and we are happy to accommodate you as much as possible.
  • This position offers an unlimited contract.
  • In this position you will be working from our Berlin/Potsdam office.
  • Occasional travel to customer and partner locations is required annually.
  • Please enclose your complete documents (CV, letter of motivation, salary expectations and earliest possible starting date) with your application.
