Feierabend

The end of the working day in Germany — a cultural concept meaning work is truly over.

Feierabend literally translates to "celebration evening" and refers to the end of the working day. In German work culture, when Feierabend arrives, work is truly over.

This is more than just leaving the office — it is a cultural boundary:

  • Sending emails or messages after Feierabend is frowned upon
  • Many Germans will not respond to work communications until the next morning
  • Calling a colleague after hours is considered disrespectful unless it is genuinely urgent

The concept reflects Germany's strong emphasis on work-life balance. Standard working hours are 38-40 hours per week, and overtime is the exception rather than the rule.

"Schönen Feierabend!" (Have a nice evening!) is a common farewell among colleagues.
