Postdoc (f/m/x)
(full-time, 40h per week)
in the field of Late Antique and Early Medieval Multinormativity with a particular focus on the study of the original transmission of documentary evidence from the late Roman to the medieval period.
The position is assigned to the Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO). IMAFO is an interdisciplinary research institution conducting top-level research on medieval history. The close interaction of the working groups allows innovative research approaches through the synergy effects of multidisciplinary research. IMAFO employs around 70 academic and administrative staff.
The successful candidate will work on the publication of a monograph (to be finished within three years) and will take part in and contribute to the ongoing projects of the department of Historical Identity research at the IMAFO within the research areas of the Head of the Department, Maximilian Diesenberger, and the Director of the Institute, Helmut Reimitz.
Your Tasks

conducting independent research on late Antique and early medieval legal and documentary sources, preferably in a comparative approach between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Latin West legal and social landscapes
-
engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue at the IMAFO and the Austrian Academy with other departments and units
-
preparing the publication of a monograph
-
actively participating in the organization of academic events and joint publications
-
support of public outreach activities and initiatives at the IMAFO
Your Profile
-
PhD in late Antique and/or medieval history
-
experience in the study of late Antique and original evidence (with a focus on documentary and legal sources), papyrology, diplomatics, paleography and codicology of ancient and medieval documents
-
PhD within the above outlined field of research (and defended max. 3 years before the start of the position)
-
experience with methods in the Digital and Computational Humanities
-
fluent in English and German, good knowledge of Greek and Latin, preferable other source languages for the study of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern documents
-
good record of international publications and lectures (corresponding to academic age);
-
flexibility, good communication skills, creativity, ability to work in a team

The position is awarded on a fixed-term basis.
The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 70.167,44 (full-time based), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.
The position is offered for 3 years with the opportunity for renewal for another three years. The starting date is September 1, 2026. Funding for conference and research travel as well as for the organization of academic events is available.
